Tom Hendry - of the Milnerton Old Boys - has written a superb Castle Cape Town Tens weekend review; just a week after his side did themselves proud in the Premier League at Hamilton's.
So, a little over a week after the Castle Cape Town Tens, and the MOB have just finished recovering properly!
After five solid games of rugby against some of SA's finest, and plenty of encounters with the sponsors product, the MOB left with their heads held high. Some left with their heads held low, once again thanks to the sponsors.
The Friday night saw the MOB arrive in great spirits knowing they had to take on the Mighty Maties later that evening. After a few quick tries by the Maties, and a few stitches for the Maties, the game was wrapped up and it was off to assembly for the boys. (However, Ryno, the 'Main O', had a very good chat to Maties captain Bennie Booysen on the field, which ended up with Ryno concussed and out for Friday night's festivities.)
On this special occasion, the MOB had been given permission to consume vast amounts of product as there were plenty of guests attending assembly. In between singing the school anthem, and consuming, there was time for the boys to mix with some of the International Legends. After the coach sent the squad home early for a good night's rest, he proceeded to attend one of Cape Town's finest 'dance' clubs and managed to bump into a few of our prefects. Needless to say, Saturday morning wasn't the best for certain members of our squad.
With that said, Day Two started very competitively with the MOB narrowly going down to Hammies in the last movement of the game, and then MOB dominated the Ozzie Legends to win their first game of the tournament. Celebrations were in order. Off to the new stadium for a rugby festival, and back to Hammies for the fines session. The fines ended early for some. Not many, but for some. (Andy didn't want to leave 'cos he wanted 'pudding'??)
William, aka 'Maverick' wanted to head back to the Cape's finest 'dance' club, and Rowe aka 'the Mole' (ex-MOB and current Hammies player) was caught in the midst of the MOB by his new teammates - oh did he pay for that on Day Three!
Day Three was a blur for most. Bodies were sore, heads were even worse, and it was the knockout stage of the competition. Scatterlings of Africa lay ahead, it felt like they were playing the Scatterlings of the MOB. The boys went on to the field with a point to prove. Soon into the game they were seven points up, and the floodgates opened. After coming out convincing winners, the MOB were looking forward to a semifinal against Hammies or WP.
But Ryno, the 'Main O', had a little chat to the Tournament Director, and explained that he would love the opportunity to make things good with the Maties captain. The next thing we knew, it was Maties up again! This game was fierce. It was fast. It was powerful and no one was holding back.
The MOB had come to do a job and they weren't standing back for anyone. With a few minutes in the first half remaining, the MOB were defending a 7-0 lead. Seconds before the end of the first half, the Maties ran away to score under the poles leaving it all level at half-time. This was also Ryno's opportunity to have his chat with Bennie now. From the kick-off, Bennie came through to contest and the 'Main O' took him out in mid-air! This left the MOB with one man down, the ref against them, and somehow, the Maties managed to get 11 on the field. It was downhill from there. The Maties finished strong winners at 24-7 and it was off to have a long chat with the sponsors in the Beer Tent.
As predicted, Day Three ended with a bang! Symsie had given up the dance-off as no one could get anywhere near to compete, The 'Moose' even broke out 'the worm' and Andy did the usual Grease-lightning moves, Reggie had been transformed into Rambo and decided he was big enough to tell Bob exactly what he thought of the tournament and even suggested that Reggie should be invited to play for the Legends next year. Hmmm...
I think it is safe to say not much work was done on Monday.
All in all, the Castle Cape Town Tens was an awesome weekend. Good, hard, competitive rugby with great friends, and a great environment to enjoy a cold beverage or 36.
The MOB would like to thank all involved with the Tens, and we can guarantee we will be back next year in hope of going one step further and competing in the final!
Thanks again,
THE MOB (pictured above!)
